You are on the companion site for A McCoy in Hatfield Country. This page holds the book's source notes. New here? Start with the five stops →

The proof layer

Every factual claim in the book carries a grade in these notes, and the grade never hides: Record (a document any reader can pull), Period print (what the newspapers of the day said), Secondary (a later writer, named), or Family telling (testimony carried down in the family, attributed to its chain). Where two accounts conflict, the conflict stands in the open — the notes do not smooth it away.

Three chapters' notes stand here now: Chapter One and Chapter Eight complete, and the first two sections of Chapter Eleven. The other chapters join them as the build goes on, until all fourteen stand here, beside the documents they cite.

Look it up — don’t scroll for it

Type a name, a place, or a word — Scaggs, Swain, fire chief, bond — and the page keeps only the notes that carry it, with your word lit up. Or jump by chapter:

Chapter One (22 entries)  ·  Chapter Eight (14 entries)  ·  Chapter Eleven (§A–§B)

Source Notes — Chapter One, “The Bloodline”

The complete notes to Chapter One, as they stand in the current build (v36) — every entry, in order. Use the lookup above: type a name or a word and the page keeps only the entries that carry it.

Source Notes — Chapter Eight, “No Exceptions”

The complete notes to Chapter Eight, as they stand in the current build (v25) — the chief at work: the Henderson arrest and its paper, the office, the fire-chief lists, the Key Club, and the family testimony, each at its grade.

Source Notes — Chapter Eleven, “The Firehouse Killing”

§A — The months between (the bridge)

§B — The eldest son (Brook's life)

Standing here now: the complete notes to Chapters One and Eight, and sections §A–§B of Chapter Eleven's eleven sections. The full notes to all fourteen chapters — some 96,000 words, with the conflict registers — publish with the full build. Entries are rendered from the current chapter builds, lightly cleaned of internal file paths.
